Browsing through old pics we came across a photo of Dad shot with an old camera using flash. The photo would of been a bit of a challenge to paint but since it was requested, why not!
The photo had to be reprocessed and enlarged. The whites, highlights was reduced and the shadows, midtones lifted.
I kept elements of the bright light around the eyes, cheeks and eyebrows as it made the face standout even more against
the dark background.
The trickies parts to paint on this piece was the lines in the forehead and below the cheeks. Hard artificial light introduced from the flash does strange things to the natural values in a picture.
Shadows are more shallow, colour tones change and some highlights are burned out.
The forehead and hair was kept simple and the details were concentrated around the eyes and glasses.
